When a soldier was shipped overseas, his beloved dog was left behind with his (also beloved) wife. She knew her soldier would be gone for a long time, but how do you tell a dog his owner won’t be coming home tonight -- or tomorrow night -- or for a long, long time?
Did he sit at the window waiting for his human to walk in the front door? Did he sadly curl up with his old T-shirt at night, smelling the scent of the man he loved? What goes on in a dog’s head when the person he adores is out of his world for so long? In this case, three years passed ...
And then the day comes to pick up the soldier from the airport. So naturally, the dog goes along. Waiting patiently at the luggage carrier, he isn’t quite sure who he’s seeing when the soldier stops a few yards away. But there’s something about that man …
Suddenly, he realizes who it is, and with a lunge and a leap, he bolts to his owner’s side. “You’re home! You’re home!” he seems to say. There are no recriminations from the ecstatic dog. No complaints of, “Where have you been?” He’s so excited, he just doesn’t know how to react.
Throwing himself into the arms of his best friend, the dog completely falls apart. Trying to lick his face and fawn at his feet and climb into his arms all at once, the dog loses his footing and falls on the floor.
And then, as though he’s had to keep his voice bottled up against this day, the dog begins singing his happiness to the world. Passers-by stop to look and smile, and the dog lifts his voice to the world, proclaiming his love in a doggy serenade.
Although his owner tries to shush him and calm him down, that just isn’t going to happen. After all, three years is a long time, and the dog has no choice but to let loose with all his emotions.
